Fallen line, sparks or smoke

Stay back at least 8 metres, keep children and pets clear, and call 111 before anyone else. After a storm, West Auckland streets often have branches tangled in the lines: a wire pinned under a fallen tree can still be live, so never approach to clear it yourself.

Help your neighbours

Live community map & report a power cut

If neighbours are also without power, the fault is on the network, not your switchboard. The map below shows outages reported by other Selectra readers across New Zealand in real time. Use it as a first diagnostic before you call: if an active outage is already plotted near you, crews likely know about it. A short anonymous report helps others see what is happening in your suburb. It does not replace the call to Vector.

Immediate danger

Fallen power line, sparks, burning smell or smoke? Call 111 before reporting anything else. Stay back at least 8 metres from any downed line.

Report a power cut

Thanks: your report is recorded

Now make the official call to your lines company so a crew is dispatched. For a fallen line or any hazard, dial 111 first.

Before you submit

Have you called your lines company first? They are the only party that can dispatch a crew. This form is a community signal that helps neighbours, not an emergency channel. For a fallen line or any hazard, call 111 immediately.

Who fixes the fault

Your lines company and its 24/7 fault line

Only the lines company that owns the poles and wires in your street can dispatch a crew. Across West Auckland that is Vector. Call the number below once your report shows the outage is on the network.

Why West Auckland loses power

Waitakere bush, overhead lines and the wind that brings trees down

West Auckland's outage profile is defined by trees. The closer a suburb sits to the Waitakere Ranges, the more its overhead lines run through bush, and the more a windy night turns into a power cut.

Bush-edge tree fall

Titirangi, Glen Eden, Swanson, Waiatarua: lines thread through tall kauri and native bush. A single windy night can bring multiple trees across conductors, and crews often have to access faults on foot rather than by truck.

Westerly fronts

Massey, Te Atatu, Henderson Valley: the west takes the first hit from Tasman Sea fronts. Sustained westerly wind, not just one big gust, is what loosens branches and drops them onto the overhead network over a long night.

Denser urban west

New Lynn, Kelston, central Henderson: the flatter, more built-up west has a mix of underground and overhead supply. Faults here are usually equipment or vehicle-into-pole events, and restoration tends to be quicker than in the bush suburbs.

West Auckland-specific tip

On a stormy night, the bush suburbs are restored last, not because Vector ignores them but because crews fix the largest groups of homes first and then work out along the spurs into the ranges. If you are in Titirangi or Waiatarua, expect a longer wait, keep a torch and a charged phone handy, and trust the estimated restoration time on the Vector map rather than calling repeatedly. Save 0508 832 867 in your phone before the next front arrives.

Vector damage claim: process and realistic outcomes

West Auckland outages are more often storm-driven than equipment-driven, and that matters for claims: a tree-fall outage is usually treated as weather rather than negligence. Here is the realistic path.

  1. 1Call 0508 832 867 and request the incident number. Note the time, the duration and any visible cause (tree on line, transformer hum, pole strike).
  2. 2Lodge the claim at vector.co.nz/claims within 30 days, quoting that incident number.
  3. 3Include photos, the appliance model and age, the original receipt if available, and a registered electrician's report (Vector reimburses up to about NZ$120 for the report when the claim succeeds).
  4. 4Decision in 20 to 40 working days. Equipment failures succeed most often; a tree-fall storm outage is usually excluded, so your contents insurance is the realistic route for surge damage and spoiled food.

West Auckland-specific questions

Frequently asked questions: West Auckland outages

Vector at 0508 832 867 (or 0508 VECTOR), available 24/7. The same number covers New Lynn, Glen Eden, Henderson, Te Atatu, Massey, Kelston and the bush-edge suburbs of Titirangi and Swanson. For a fallen line or hazard, call 111 first.

Geography. The overhead lines that supply the western suburbs run close to the bush of the Waitakere Ranges, and West Auckland takes the first hit from westerly fronts off the Tasman Sea. Wind brings branches and whole trees down across the conductors, which is the single biggest cause of outages here. The flatter urban west (New Lynn, Kelston) fares better than the bush suburbs.

For a single fault on an urban feeder (New Lynn, Henderson): 45 to 90 minutes. For a bush-suburb tree-fall fault (Titirangi, Swanson, Waiatarua): 2 to 6 hours, because access is often on foot. After a major storm the most remote western spurs can be among the last restored in the city, since crews fix the largest groups of homes first.

A tree-fall outage is usually treated as weather rather than Vector negligence, so a direct damage claim is unlikely to succeed. Your better route is your contents insurance: many policies cover spoiled food (often a NZ$200 to NZ$500 sub-limit) and surge-damaged appliances. If you believe the cause was Vector's equipment rather than the storm, you can still lodge a claim at vector.co.nz/claims within 30 days.

Yes. Vector must give at least 5 working days notice for planned maintenance, by letter or email to the property, and lists upcoming work on its outage map under planned outages. Vegetation management around the bush suburbs sometimes needs a planned outage to cut back trees safely. Medically-dependent customers can register with their retailer for proactive phone notice.

The Auckland power outage hub covers the whole city and links to the guides for the North Shore, the central suburbs, South Auckland and Franklin. Use it if your search spans more than just the western suburbs.
