Fallen line, sparks or smoke

Stay back at least 8 metres and call 111 first. On Opotiki's rural and coastal roads a line brought down by a slip or fallen tree may be hard to see in the dark or under debris, so keep your distance and treat every loose conductor as live.

Help your neighbours

Live community map & report a power cut

If neighbours are also without power, the fault is on the network, not your switchboard. The map below shows outages reported by other Selectra readers across New Zealand in real time. Use it as a first diagnostic before you call: if an active outage is already plotted near you, crews likely know about it. A short anonymous report helps others see what is happening in your suburb. It does not replace the call to your lines company.

Immediate danger

Fallen power line, sparks, burning smell or smoke? Call 111 before reporting anything else. Stay back at least 8 metres from any downed line.

Report a power cut

Thanks: your report is recorded

Now make the official call to your lines company so a crew is dispatched. For a fallen line or any hazard, dial 111 first.

Before you submit

Have you called your lines company first? They are the only party that can dispatch a crew. This form is a community signal that helps neighbours, not an emergency channel. For a fallen line or any hazard, call 111 immediately.

Your lines company and its 24/7 fault line

Only the lines company that owns the poles and wires in your street can dispatch a crew. Call the number below if your report shows the outage is on the network.

Horizon Networks

Opotiki and the eastern Bay of Plenty coast

24/7 fault line
0800 467 496

Dial 0800 HORIZON. 24/7 faults line.

Coverage: Opotiki township, Waiotahe, Ohiwa, Waioeka, Toatoa, Te Kaha approaches and the surrounding eastern Bay of Plenty.

Why remote Opotiki loses power

Three reasons outages last longer out east

Opotiki sits at the far reach of the Horizon Networks footprint, fed by long overhead lines through demanding terrain. The three patterns below explain both why the power goes off and why restoration can take more patience than in a town.

Exposed coastline

Opotiki, Waiotahe, Ohiwa: the eastern coast takes the brunt of easterly and ex-tropical storms. Wind, surf-borne salt and flying debris on overhead lines are the most frequent trigger for a sudden cut.

Slips and bush

Waioeka, Toatoa, the inland valleys: heavy rain brings slips that take out poles and block the very roads crews use to reach them. A line down a steep bush gully is one of the slowest faults to clear anywhere in the region.

Single-feeder distance

The Te Kaha approaches and rural blocks: communities at the end of one long feeder have little backup. When that line faults there is often no alternate route, so the wait is for a crew to physically find and repair the break.

Opotiki-specific tip

Because crews travel far out east, an accurate report matters more here than in a city. When you call 0800 467 496, give a precise location (nearest pole number if you can read it, road name and a landmark): it can save a crew an hour of searching along an unlit rural line. Keep a charged power bank and a battery radio through the storm season.

Lost the freezer contents? Claiming after an Opotiki outage

Horizon Networks runs no standing online claims portal, and most Opotiki outages are storm or slip driven, which lines companies treat as force majeure and exclude from direct claims. For surge or spoilage losses the realistic route is your own cover and a written request to your retailer.

  1. 1Call 0800 467 496 and record the incident number, the duration and the stated cause.
  2. 2Claim spoiled food and surge damage through your contents insurance. Rural freezers full of a season's meat make this worth doing: many policies carry a NZ$200 to NZ$500 freezer-contents sub-limit.
  3. 3Send a written request to your retailer with the incident number, photos and a registered electrician's report so they can escalate to Horizon if the fault was network equipment, not weather.
  4. 4Allow 4 to 8 weeks. Appliances under 5 years with the original receipt fare best. Storm and slip events are usually excluded, so insurance is the stronger path out east.

Opotiki-specific questions

Frequently asked questions: Opotiki outages

Horizon Networks, 24 hours a day, on 0800 467 496 (0800 HORIZON). The same line covers Opotiki township, Waiotahe, Ohiwa and the eastern Bay of Plenty coast. For a fallen line or any hazard, dial 111 first.

Open the Horizon Networks live outage map, which lists active and planned faults across the eastern Bay and refreshes through the day. The community map higher up this page also shows real-time reports from Selectra readers near you. If your block is dark and nothing is mapped yet, you may be first to notice: ring the fault line so a crew can be dispatched.

Opotiki is at the remote end of the network, served by long overhead feeders through hill, bush and coast. Crews must travel further to reach a fault, slips can block the access roads themselves, and some communities have no alternate feed to switch onto. A town fault may clear in an hour or two, but a coastal storm or a slip on a single line can run to half a day or more.

Weather and terrain. Easterly storms drive wind, salt and debris onto exposed overhead lines, while heavy rain triggers slips that bring down poles in the Waioeka and inland valleys. Both are why supply here is more storm-sensitive than on a compact urban grid.

Yes. Planned maintenance is notified ahead of time, usually by letter or email to the property and listed on the live outage map under planned work. If anyone in your home depends on power for medical equipment, register with your retailer so you get advance notice and a contingency plan, which matters more in a remote area.

Most outages out east are storm or slip driven and excluded from a direct network claim. Your strongest route is your contents insurance for surge damage and spoiled food. Keep the incident number from 0800 467 496, photos and the original receipt, and also send a written request to your retailer in case the cause was network equipment rather than the weather.
