Fallen line or hazard

Stay back at least 8 metres, keep clear of standing water near a downed line, and call 111 first. A line brought down by a slip on Tākaka Hill or in a Golden Bay storm can still be live, so treat every fallen conductor as energised.

Help your neighbours

Live community map & report a power cut

If neighbours are also without power, the fault is on the network, not your switchboard. The map below shows outages reported by other Selectra readers across New Zealand in real time. Use it as a first diagnostic before you call: if an active outage is already plotted near you, crews likely know about it. A short anonymous report helps others see what is happening in your area. It does not replace the call to your lines company.

Immediate danger

Fallen power line, sparks, burning smell or smoke? Call 111 before reporting anything else. Stay back at least 8 metres from any downed line.

Report a power cut

Thanks: your report is recorded

Now make the official call to your lines company so a crew is dispatched. For a fallen line or any hazard, dial 111 first.

Before you submit

Have you called your lines company first? They are the only party that can dispatch a crew. This form is a community signal that helps neighbours, not an emergency channel. For a fallen line or any hazard, call 111 immediately.

Your lines company and its 24/7 fault line

Only the lines company that owns the poles and wires in your street can dispatch a crew. Call the number below if your report shows the outage is on the network.

What drives Tasman and Golden Bay outages

A district that runs from a growing town to a remote bay over an alpine hill road has a distinctive outage profile. Three patterns dominate the Network Tasman register.

Tākaka Hill and Golden Bay

Takaka, Collingwood and the bay: Golden Bay is fed across the steep Tākaka Hill road, which is prone to slips. A storm that closes the road can also slow power restoration, so bay outages tend to last the longest in the district.

Ex-tropical storms

Motueka, Riwaka and the coast: the top of the South Island catches the tail of ex-tropical systems and heavy rain events. Flooding and wind-driven tree fall on the horticultural feeders are a recurring summer and autumn hazard.

Richmond growth

Richmond is one of the fastest-growing towns at the top of the South Island. New subdivisions mean contractor cable strikes on freshly buried lines are a recurring source of short, localised town outages.

A Golden Bay tip

Golden Bay residents should plan for longer outages than Richmond sees, because the bay is fed over a single hill route that storms can cut. A torch, a charged power bank and a battery radio are worth keeping ready, and it is wise to know your nearest civil defence point for a multi-day weather event.

If a power surge damages an appliance in the Tasman district

Network Tasman does not publish a consumer damage-claim portal, so surge-damaged appliances are normally handled through your own cover rather than the lines company. Here is the path Tasman households use.

  1. 1Call 0800 508 100 and ask for the incident reference, the start time and any recorded cause. You will need this if you make a claim.
  2. 2Lodge the claim through your home contents insurance, the usual route for surge damage. Keep photos, the original receipt and a registered electrician's report.
  3. 3Send a short written request to your electricity retailer as well, quoting the incident reference, in case the fault is later attributed to network negligence rather than weather.
  4. 4Expect 4 to 8 weeks. Appliances under 5 years old, with a receipt and an electrician's report, fare best. Storm and flood events are usually treated as weather, not negligence.

Tasman questions

Frequently asked questions: Tasman outages

Network Tasman, the community lines company, on 0800 508 100, 24 hours a day. The same number covers Richmond, Motueka, Mapua, Takaka and Golden Bay. For a hazard such as a downed line, dial 111 first.

The official live map is on the Network Tasman website under "no power", linked in the card above. It shows current and planned outages across the district. For a quicker neighbourhood view, the Selectra community map higher up this page shows cuts reported by other readers in real time.

Golden Bay is fed across the steep Tākaka Hill, a road prone to slips. When a storm closes or damages that route it can also slow electricity restoration, and the remote coastal spurs out to Collingwood take crews longer to reach. So a Golden Bay outage routinely lasts longer than an equivalent fault in Richmond town.

A single fault in central Richmond or Motueka: typically 30 to 90 minutes. Rural horticultural feeders around Mapua and Upper Moutere: 1 to 3 hours. Golden Bay and remote coastal spurs: 2 to 8 hours, longer when Tākaka Hill is affected.

Yes. Network Tasman gives advance notice of planned maintenance, usually by letter or email, and lists upcoming work on its outage page. If someone in the household depends on mains power for medical equipment, register as a medically-dependent customer with your retailer so the network can give you proactive notice.

Network Tasman does not run a public damage-claim portal, so surge damage is normally claimed through your home contents insurance. Keep the incident reference, photos, the original receipt and a registered electrician's report, and send a written request to your retailer too. Allow 4 to 8 weeks. Weather-driven storm and flood outages are usually excluded.
