How the tariff works

  • Tariff type: Variable (single flat-rate). The Grey Power Plan uses one simple per‑kWh rate at all times of day and night rather than a time‑of‑use structure. Charges comprise a daily fixed charge plus a single variable energy charge.
  • How charges are calculated: Daily fixed charge (Low User or Standard User, depending on annual consumption thresholds) + flat per‑kWh usage charge. Network (lines) charges are passed through and, on networks that publish time‑of‑use tariffs, the retailer converts them to a flat customer rate; this keeps the plan on a single‑rate structure.
  • Eligibility and metering: Available to residential customers who are current financial members of Grey Power Federation. A smart meter is not required to join this plan; standard meters are accepted.
  • Daily fees and discounts: Dual‑fuel households (electricity + gas/LPG) receive an All Energy Discount of $0.30/day while both fuels remain with the retailer. A credit card payment surcharge of 1.0% applies if paying by Visa/Mastercard; other one‑off fees (e.g., reconnection) may apply per the fee schedule.
  • Price per kWh and daily charges: Exact cents‑per‑kWh and daily fixed charges vary by network area and Low/Standard User option and are provided for your specific address during sign‑up. If you need written confirmation of current rates, contact the provider directly.
  • Regional rates: Rates for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central North Island, Eastland, Taranaki, Whanganui, Wellington, Marlborough, Westland, Canterbury, Otago and Southland are network‑specific and not published in a single public table; please contact the provider for confirmation for your address if these cannot be viewed online.

Who this plan suits best

A good fit for customers who want a simple, flat per‑kWh price with no need to chase off‑peak windows—e.g., small families and larger households with mixed or peak‑time usage, or anyone who values predictable pricing over time‑of‑use micromanagement. It also suits members without a smart meter and those who prefer straightforward bills. EV owners and customers able to shift significant load may achieve greater savings on Grey Power’s time‑of‑use plans (e.g., overnight charging or weekend‑heavy usage). Solar users who primarily self‑consume can use the Grey Power Plan, but because it’s a single‑rate tariff, export‑driven strategies are not specifically incentivised. Small businesses should consider business tariffs; the Grey Power Plan is designed for residential members.

Additional services included

Optional add‑ons are available. Broadband and home phone can be bundled on the same bill, with indicative monthly broadband pricing published (e.g., Lite Fibre from the mid‑$60s per month when you bring your own modem, or slightly higher if you take a provider modem; ADSL/VDSL and higher‑speed fibre tiers are also listed). Fixed wireless broadband options are available, and home phone service can be added with unlimited calling add‑ons for NZ mobiles or selected international destinations at a fixed monthly price. Gas services are available (natural gas and LPG), and households that keep both electricity and gas/LPG with the provider receive an ongoing All Energy Discount of 30 cents per day. The provider also promotes partner offers for car and pet insurance (percentage discounts and a one‑month introductory credit cap apply).

Plan conditions at a glance

  • Eligibility: You must be a current, financial member of Grey Power Federation and consent to membership verification; if membership lapses, the retailer may move you to another plan.
  • Availability: Offered in selected regions and for a limited period (extendable at the retailer’s discretion); residential customers only.
  • Plan structure: Flat (single‑rate) electricity plan with Low User or Standard User daily charge options based on annual consumption thresholds.
  • Smart meters: Not required to join the Grey Power Plan (standard meters accepted).
  • No prompt payment discount: Pricing is presented without a separate prompt‑payment discount; late‑payment consequences are set out in the standard terms.
  • Dual‑fuel benefit: All Energy Discount of 30 cents/day applies while both electricity and gas/LPG remain with the provider.
  • Promotional credits: Joining/bundle credits are applied as bill credits; if you switch to another retailer within 12 months of your start date, the promotional credit may be reversed.
  • Fees and surcharges: One‑off service fees (e.g., reconnection) and a 1.0% credit‑card surcharge may apply; see the schedule of fees.
  • Price changes: At least 30 days’ notice of price changes; individual notice with reasons if increases exceed 5%. Network/transmission/wholesale cost changes may be passed through with notice where possible.
  • Network charges: Lines and transmission costs are passed through; on networks with time‑of‑use tariffs, the retailer converts them to a flat customer rate.
  • Contract term: No long‑term fixed term; you can leave at any time under the standard terms (note promotional credit clawback rule above).
  • Load control: The lines company or retailer may apply load control where required for safety, network management, or market participation (as set out in the standard terms).

Promotions and discounts

Active offers that can be applied when joining the Grey Power Plan include a joining credit on the first power bill for new electricity customers (commonly advertised as a fixed dollar credit applied once after supply starts). Where a promotional credit is given, the provider’s standard terms state it may be reversed if you switch away within 12 months of your start date. Promotions typically require online sign-up and/or a promo code shown during the application process. Bundling incentives are available alongside the Grey Power Plan. Customers who add broadband at sign-up may receive a combined joining credit on the power bill plus a limited period of free broadband; existing electricity customers who later add broadband are offered a shorter free-broadband period. Dual-fuel customers (electricity plus natural gas or LPG) receive an ongoing All Energy Discount of 30 cents per day while both fuels remain with the provider. Grey Power’s other plan-specific perks (e.g., free lunchtime power or half‑price weekends) apply to different time‑of‑use plans, not to the Grey Power Plan’s flat-rate option.

How Grey can change this plan's price

Prices and fees can change with at least 30 days’ notice. If the retailer increases fees or charges by more than 5%, it will provide individual notice (e.g., letter or email) and give reasons for the increase. If you do not agree with a price change, you may terminate the agreement. Network‑related costs (e.g., distribution/lines charges, transmission, or wholesale market costs) may be flowed through or adjusted when they arise from factors outside the retailer’s reasonable control; where possible, the retailer will give 30 days’ notice. The company may also update its standard terms and product schedules with 30 days’ notice; if you do not agree to those changes, you can end the agreement.

How the tariff works

  • Tariff type: Time‑of‑Use with a daily free‑power window. Charges vary by period (Peak, Off‑Peak, Night) and by network region.
  • Free period: 12 pm–2 pm daily electricity usage is free. The free window applies to usage charges only; daily fixed charges and any gas, broadband or other non‑electricity charges still apply during this time.
  • Peak periods and charging: 7 am–11 am and 5 pm–9 pm; highest per‑kWh rates due to demand.
  • Off‑Peak periods and charging: 11 am–12 pm, 2 pm–5 pm and 9 pm–11 pm; lower per‑kWh rates than Peak.
  • Night period and charging: 11 pm–7 am; the lowest per‑kWh rates, suitable for EV and battery charging.
  • How charges are calculated: bill = (daily fixed charge × days) + sum of (usage in each period × applicable per‑kWh rate) − applicable free‑period usage. Energy rates include Delivery/Network Services, Metering, Billing/Administration and the Electricity Authority Levy.
  • Price per kWh and daily fees: exact figures are address‑ and network‑specific and shown at sign‑up after you enter your address and user type (Low/Standard). If you need confirmed figures for your property, please contact the provider directly.
  • Regional notes: rates vary by region including Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central North Island, Eastland, Taranaki, Whanganui, Wellington, Marlborough, Westland, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland. If your region’s rates are not displayed or you require confirmation, please contact the provider directly.
  • Eligibility: requires an eligible, actively communicating smart meter, residential supply at your primary residence, and a standard single‑phase connection (not on a private network).

Who this plan suits best

Power Lunch suits customers who can shift meaningful usage into the free lunchtime window and off‑peak/night periods. Retirees and work‑from‑home households who run appliances between 12 pm–2 pm, as well as families able to schedule laundry/dishwashing and cooking into the free window, can gain the most. It is a strong fit for EV owners who can charge overnight (11 pm–7 am) or opportunistically over lunch, and for “load‑shifters” who prefer flexibility over a single flat rate. It is less suitable for customers unable to change habits at all, and it is residential‑only (not for small businesses). Solar export households should note the plan’s fair‑use/export provisions; heavy exporters may be better on a different plan if their free‑period usage regularly exceeds 50% of total consumption or they export from the primary residence.

Additional services included

Optional broadband and home phone can be added to your electricity account. Broadband plan pricing is published (e.g., Everyday Fibre around $95/month; Fibre Pro around $111/month; Lite Fibre options available, with a Bring‑Your‑Own‑Modem price tier). Home phone add‑ons start from about $10/month for line rental, with optional calling packs (e.g., mobile and selected international destinations) as extras. Periodic offers provide two months’ free broadband when you add broadband to an existing electricity account, or a joining credit plus two months’ free broadband when you sign up as a new electricity+broadened bundle customer. Broadband is available only while your electricity remains with Grey Power Electricity and standard modem/termination fees may apply. Natural Gas and LPG supply are also available as optional add‑ons in selected areas; if you bundle electricity and gas you receive the All Energy Discount of $0.30 per day. Insurance products are promoted via a partner; these are optional and separate from energy services (pricing and eligibility are provided at the time of application or via the partner).

Plan conditions at a glance

  • Free electricity applies daily from 12 pm–2 pm to usage charges only; daily fixed charges and any gas, broadband or other non‑electricity charges continue to apply during the free window.
  • Eligibility: residential customers only, at your primary residence, with an eligible and actively communicating electricity smart meter; standard single‑phase connection; not supplied via a private network.
  • Fair use: free‑period usage must be reasonable and not overly excessive; if free‑period usage exceeds 50% of total consumption or if you export energy at your primary residence, the provider may contact you to adjust usage and may move you to another plan with 30 days’ notice.
  • Meter data requirements: the plan relies on half‑hourly smart‑meter data. If the meter persistently fails to communicate (e.g., for three or more continuous days), you may be moved to a Standard plan at the provider’s discretion (you will be notified).
  • Rates and availability: per‑kWh rates and daily charges vary by address, user type (Low/Standard) and network region; eligibility and pricing are confirmed at sign‑up after entering your address.
  • Contract and exit: no long‑term fixed term; provide 30 days’ notice to leave. If notice is not provided, an early termination fee (e.g., $150 + GST) may apply under the provider’s standard terms.
  • General: energy rates include Delivery/Network Services, Metering, Billing/Administration and the Electricity Authority Levy; network charges are generally flowed through with no mark‑up; promotional credits are subject to their specific terms and may be reversed if you leave within the stated period.

Promotions and discounts

Power Lunch includes two free hours of electricity every day from 12 pm–2 pm, plus discounted off‑peak and night rates; the free period applies to electricity usage only, while daily fixed charges and any gas, broadband or other non‑electricity charges still apply. Eligibility requires an actively communicating smart meter and residential supply at your primary residence on a standard single‑phase connection. Active signup offers frequently advertised include: a joining credit on your first electricity bill (commonly $150 with a promo code when signing up online); bundle offers that combine electricity with broadband (e.g., a joining credit on your first power bill and two months’ free broadband for new bundle customers; existing electricity customers who add broadband may also receive two months’ free broadband). Promotions change periodically and carry terms such as eligibility checks, plan availability by address/meter type, and standard early termination/notice rules. A standing bundle benefit also noted by the provider is the All Energy Discount of $0.30 per day when you have both electricity and gas with them. Monthly “Power Draw” prize promotions automatically enter active accounts into draws for bill credits, with additional entries for tenure and online‑account registration; prizes are awarded as electricity credits. Always confirm current promo codes, availability, and dates at sign‑up, as offers may vary across landing pages and over time.

How Grey can change this plan's price

Grey Power Electricity’s Standard Residential Terms provide that they will give 30 days’ notice before changes to fees or charges take effect, and will write to you individually if fees or charges increase by more than 5% (with reasons for the increase). If you do not agree with a notified change, you may terminate your agreement. They may adjust and flow through Delivery/Network‑related costs and certain wholesale market cost changes that are outside their reasonable control; where possible, they will provide 30 days’ notice of such adjustments. Network Services Charges are generally passed through with no mark‑up, and annual lines‑company updates (commonly on or around 1 April) can change these components. The phasing‑out of Low Fixed Charge regulations is also noted as a factor that can alter daily fixed charges over time.

How the tariff works

  • Tariff type: Time‑of‑Use. Weekdays are split into Peak, Off‑Peak, and Night periods. Weekend usage is discounted by the plan’s Half‑Price Weekends feature.
  • Charging structure: a daily fixed charge applies, plus variable per‑kWh rates that differ by time band and by network/region. On this plan, network services charges are bundled into the applicable Peak/Off‑Peak/Night/Weekend rates rather than shown as a separate line item.
  • Time bands: Peak 7am–11am and 5pm–9pm; Off‑Peak 11am–5pm and 9pm–11pm; Night 11pm–7am. Half‑Price Weekends apply from 12:00am Saturday to 11:59pm Sunday (all weekend usage billed at 50% of your applicable plan rates).
  • How your bill is calculated: daily fixed charge (varies by address and user type: Low User vs Standard User) plus the kWh you consume in each time band at that band’s rate; any applicable weekend usage is charged at half the corresponding rate. Actual per‑kWh prices and the daily charge are address‑ and network‑specific.
  • Eligibility and metering: requires an eligible, actively communicating smart meter; residential supply on a standard single‑phase connection (not on private networks). Credit checks and Grey Power membership apply.
  • Regional pricing: per‑kWh and daily charges vary by network area. For current rates for Northland, please contact the provider directly or use the address‑based rate tool. For Auckland, contact the provider directly. For Waikato, contact the provider directly. For Bay of Plenty, contact the provider directly. For Central North Island, contact the provider directly. For Eastland, contact the provider directly. For Taranaki, contact the provider directly. For Whanganui, contact the provider directly. For Wellington, contact the provider directly. For Marlborough, contact the provider directly. For Westland, contact the provider directly. For Canterbury, contact the provider directly. For Otago, contact the provider directly. For Southland, contact the provider directly.
  • If a region’s current rate cannot be confirmed during sign‑up, ask the provider to confirm the specific per‑kWh rates and daily charge for your ICP/address before you switch.

Who this plan suits best

Best suited to households that can shift significant usage into evenings/nights and weekends. Examples include small families or larger households that can delay laundry, dishwashing, baking, and other high‑load activities to Off‑Peak/Night bands and Half‑Price Weekends. EV owners can benefit by scheduling charging during the Night band and on weekends. It also suits people who work irregular hours or from home and can run appliances outside the morning/evening peaks. It is less suitable if most consumption occurs during weekday Peak periods and cannot be shifted. The plan is designed for residential customers; small businesses generally won’t be eligible unless on a residential ICP. Solar users may see mixed value: self‑consumption can reduce weekday off‑peak usage, but Night rates and Half‑Price Weekends can still help where weekend and overnight loads are high.

Additional services included

Optional add‑ons are available when your electricity is with Grey Power Electricity. Unlimited broadband plans include Starter (ADSL/VDSL), Lite Fibre (BYO modem option available), Everyday Fibre (500/100), and Fibre Pro (up to max/500), with plan prices published inclusive of GST (e.g., Lite Fibre BYO from $65/month; Everyday Fibre around $95/month; Fibre Pro around $111/month; Starter around $85/month). A $170 modem fee applies if you leave within 24 months after taking a supplied modem; a $20 modem delivery/return fee also applies. Periodic broadband promotions (e.g., two months’ free broadband) may be offered; terms apply. Home phone (VoIP) can be added to broadband: a National Landline plan at $10/month (includes line rental) with an optional $20/month add‑on for unlimited NZ mobile and international landline calls to selected countries. Natural Gas and LPG supply are also available as optional services; when you hold both electricity and gas, an All Energy Discount of 30 cents per day applies. Some third‑party member benefits (e.g., insurance discounts) are also offered but are separate from electricity pricing.

Promotions and discounts

Power Shift Plan includes built‑in half‑price weekends: all electricity used from midnight Friday through midnight Sunday is billed at half the applicable time‑of‑use rate. Eligibility requires an actively communicating smart meter and residential supply. Savings depend on how much consumption you can shift into the off‑peak/night bands and weekends. Current sign‑up incentives advertised by Grey Power Electricity include a $150 credit on the first power bill for new electricity customers who sign up online using a promo code, and a bundle offer that combines a $150 power credit with two months’ free broadband for new customers who join both services with an online promo code. Existing electricity customers can add broadband and receive two months’ free broadband (broadband is only available when your electricity is with Grey Power Electricity). All such promotions are subject to terms and conditions, may require use of the specified promo code at sign‑up, and are limited to the stated customer category (e.g., new vs. existing customers). An ongoing bundle benefit is available when you hold both electricity and gas with the provider (an All Energy Discount of 30 cents per day). Offers, eligibility, and durations can change; confirm details at sign‑up and ensure you provide a valid Grey Power membership number where required.

How Grey can change this plan's price

Grey Power Electricity provides at least 30 days’ notice of price changes. Notifications are typically issued by email, bill inserts, or via the “Your Price Plan” page where customers can view updated rates from a stated date. Network Services Charges (fees from your local lines company and Transpower) are passed through with no mark‑up and are commonly updated on or around 1 April. On the Power Shift Plan, those network charges are incorporated within the Peak/Off‑Peak/Night/Weekend rates rather than shown separately, so changes to network charges flow through as changes in those time‑of‑use rates. Prices may also be adjusted to reflect regulatory changes (e.g., the multi‑year phase‑out of Low Fixed Charge regulations, which affects the balance between daily charges and per‑kWh rates). Electricity usage and daily charges can be reviewed and updated by the retailer with the required notice.

Frequently asked questions

The Selectra expert answers your questions about electricity rates

  • Fixed rate: your unit price stays the same for the duration of the contract.
  • Variable rate: the retailer can adjust the unit rate at any time, with at least 30 days' notice. Prices broadly follow wholesale electricity costs.
  • Time-of-use: the unit price changes by period of the day — cheaper overnight and during off-peak hours, more expensive at peak times (typically 7-9am and 5-9pm).
  • Spot pricing: the unit price tracks the half-hourly wholesale market. Households with flexible usage can save when prices are low, but they are exposed to spikes during cold snaps or supply shortages.

The daily fixed charge covers the cost of staying connected to the grid: network maintenance, the lines from the street to your meter and the metering equipment itself. It is billed for every day you hold an active connection, regardless of how many kWh you use.

Households using less than 8,000 kWh per year (9,000 kWh in the lower South Island) may qualify for a low-fixed-charge tariff: a smaller daily fee paired with a slightly higher unit rate. This option is being phased out by April 2027, but it is still available today and is usually a good fit for small homes and singles.

Each part of New Zealand is served by its own local lines company (Vector in Auckland, Wellington Electricity, Powerco, Aurora, Orion and more). Each lines company sets its own delivery charges based on the cost of maintaining its network — and those costs vary widely:

  • Rural and low-density networks (East Coast, West Coast, parts of Otago) cost more per customer to maintain than dense urban ones.
  • Networks with significant underground cabling (central Auckland, Wellington CBD) are more expensive to upgrade but suffer fewer storm outages.
  • South Island networks pass through hydro-rich generation regions, which can lower the wholesale component on some plans.

For these reasons, a customer in Dunedin can pay a different rate from a customer in Hamilton on the same Grey Power Electricity plan.

Comparing electricity plans is not just about the headline rate. Before signing, check:

  • Unit rate (¢ / kWh): what you pay for each unit of electricity. Lower is better.
  • Daily charge (¢ / day): a fixed cost added every day, regardless of usage.
  • Discounts: prompt-payment, direct-debit and online-billing discounts can knock 1-3% off the total.
  • Contract term and exit fees: open-term plans are usually free to leave. Fixed-term plans may charge a break fee.
  • Plan extras: free-power hours, EV night rates, solar buy-back, broadband bundle discounts.

Always cross-check your offer against several retailers using your real ICP and a 12-month consumption history before signing — the headline rate alone never tells the full story.

Under the standard terms used by most New Zealand retailers, variable rates and daily charges can be adjusted at any time, with at least 30 days' written notice to the customer. Notice is usually sent by email, on the bill, or via the customer portal. This 30-day minimum is industry practice rather than a hard statutory rule, so always check the price-change clause printed on the plan terms.

Fixed-term plans are different: the unit rate and daily charge are locked in for the duration of the contract (typically 12, 24 or 36 months). If you do not switch or renegotiate at the end of the term, you are usually moved onto the retailer's standard variable rate.
