Who to actually contact
Most people who land here want their power company or a regulator, not a comparison site. If your question is on this list, you will get help much faster from the right body below.
A billing question or refund
Your electricity retailer
They issue your bill and hold your account, so they are the only ones who can adjust a charge or arrange a refund. Their number is on your latest power bill.
A power outage
Your local lines company (24/7)
Outages are fixed by the lines company that owns the poles and wires in your area, never your retailer. Check the live outage map first.
Switching power company
Compare retailers and switch
Anyone in New Zealand can switch retailer for free and a switch usually takes only a few business days. Compare plans before you choose.
A meter or connection issue
Your lines company (distributor)
New connections, meter reads, reconnections and disconnections are run by your lines company, not the retailer that bills you.
An unresolved complaint
Utilities Disputes (free)
If your retailer or lines company cannot resolve a complaint, Utilities Disputes settles energy disputes at no cost to you.
A market or pricing rule
The Electricity Authority
The Electricity Authority (Te Mana Hiko) regulates the electricity market, while the Commerce Commission oversees what lines companies are allowed to charge.
Not sure who serves your address? Find your lines company on the electricity network hub, or compare every plan on our providers page.

The team
The people behind Selectra New Zealand
Energy economists, market analysts and content editors, drawn from the wider Selectra group to staff the New Zealand desk.
Cornelia Zavoianu
International energy expert
Cornelia researches retail electricity and natural gas markets across the Selectra group, from Europe to North America. She studies each market's tariff rules, switching mechanics and consumer-protection policies, then turns the dense regulatory language into plain guides that any household can act on.
For Selectra New Zealand she focuses on making the country's energy landscape readable: who your retailer is, which lines company runs your connection, and the practical levers that actually move a Kiwi power bill.
