New Zealand’s household electricity market is dominated by four major gentailers: Mercury, Genesis, Contact and Meridian — companies that both generate and retail electricity. Together they supply the vast majority of residential connections.
Around them sit 18 independent retailers like Nova, Pulse, Electric Kiwi, 2degrees and Octopus Energy, competing on price, flexibility and bundles. Most of NZ’s power still comes from low-cost renewable sources — but wholesale prices are set by the highest-cost thermal plant, which keeps household bills elevated.

5 things to compare
How to pick the best NZ electricity supplier
There’s no single “best” retailer — the right one depends on your usage, region and priorities.
Competitive pricing
Compare c/kWh rates AND daily fixed charges. A cheap unit rate can hide a high standing charge.
Renewable energy
Mercury, Meridian and Ecotricity sell 100% renewable plans if a lower-carbon footprint matters to you.
Customer service
Check independent reviews and complaints data. App-driven retailers like Powershop and Electric Kiwi score well.
EV & off-peak plans
If you charge an EV at home, Octopus, Tensor and Electric Kiwi offer free or ultra-cheap night-time EV rates.
Solar buy-back
If you have rooftop PV, the right retailer can pay 12–17 c/kWh for exported solar — a big chunk back on your bill.
Bundles & loyalty
Pulse, Megatel and 2degrees stack discounts when you combine power with broadband, mobile or gas.
What you’ll pay
How much is the average NZ power bill?
As of late 2024, the average Kiwi household used about 7,107 kWh of electricity per year. At an average rate of 33.89 c/kWh, that works out to roughly NZ$200 per month, or NZ$2,400 per year.
$269
Kerikeri / month
$268
Westport / month
$184
Christchurch / month
Smaller and more remote towns typically pay more because supply and distribution costs are higher.
Regional variation
Why electricity bills vary across Aotearoa
Three big factors explain why two households on the same retailer can pay very different amounts each month.
Where you live
Rates change region by region. It costs more to maintain lines in remote and rural areas, so households there often pay more per kWh.
How you use power
Heat pumps, electric hot water and winter heating push consumption up. Larger households naturally use more electricity than smaller ones.
When you use power
Time-of-use plans reward shifting laundry, dishwashing and EV charging to off-peak hours, when wholesale electricity is cheapest.

The Selectra expert answers your questions
Switching electricity providers in New Zealand is quick and straightforward. Once you sign up with your new retailer, the switch takes a few business days up to around two weeks. Your electricity supply is never interrupted — the new supplier coordinates with the old one to transfer your account.
If you have an outstanding balance with your previous electricity supplier, you cannot avoid payment by switching. The old supplier may chase the debt through reminders or debt collection. You will need to settle any overdue charges to keep a clean payment record for future accounts.
Most New Zealand electricity providers do not charge exit fees on standard residential plans. However, some fixed-term and promotional plans include early-exit fees, so always check the terms of your current contract before signing up with a new retailer.
Yes, you can switch electricity suppliers while on a fixed-term contract. Some retailers include a break fee that applies if you terminate before the term ends. Read the small print, and weigh the break fee against the savings on your new plan.
There is no single cheapest retailer: it depends on where you live, how much power you use, and whether you qualify for a low-user tariff. Independents like Electric Kiwi, Octopus Energy and Contact typically appear near the top.
Meridian Energy and Mercury generate from hydro, wind and geothermal only. Ecotricity is the only Toitū climate-positive certified retailer. Mercury-owned Powershop is also fully renewable.
