How the tariff works

  • Tariff type: a simple, anytime single‑rate electricity plan ("24 hours same rate per channel"). There are no peak/off‑peak time bands and no free‑periods. Charges comprise a daily fixed charge plus a variable usage charge per kWh, with variable rates including the Electricity Levy. Meter configuration (e.g., controlled/uncontrolled) and local network category determine the applicable rates.
  • Plan term and structure: open‑term for the standard Simple Energy Plan (no fixed term, no break fee). Promotional variants may be on a fixed term (e.g., a 12‑month contract for a welcome‑credit), after which standard open‑term pricing applies unless renewed.
  • Low‑User vs Standard‑User: Megatel offers both Low‑User and Standard‑User options (subject to eligibility). In line with the Government’s phase‑out of the Low Fixed Charge regulations, Megatel’s Low‑User daily charge is set at $1.50 per day from 1 April 2025 (before GST and after any applicable discounts). Standard‑User plans have a higher daily charge and lower per‑kWh rate than Low‑User plans; the better option depends on annual usage.
  • How pricing is calculated: Your bill shows the number of days on supply (daily charge) and electricity consumed (per‑kWh charge) for each meter channel (e.g., controlled hot water). Energy is billed in arrears on a monthly cycle. If you export solar, a separate export line appears with a buy‑back rate (see Additional notes).
  • Price per kWh and regional rates: Megatel does not publish a single nationwide price table; per‑kWh and daily charges are property‑specific and depend on your network and meter setup. For current rates, use Megatel’s address/ICP checker or contact Megatel directly.
  • Northland, Auckland, WaikatoBay of Plenty, Central North Island, Eastland, Taranaki, Whanganui, Wellington, Marlborough, Westland, Canterbury, Otago, Southland.
  • Eligibility notes: A smart meter is not required for the anytime tariff itself. An import/export‑capable smart meter is required to receive any solar export buy‑back. Bundled discounts (MEGA Saver) require electricity plus at least one eligible Megatel service at the same address/account, and discounts start once all services are active in the same billing period.

Who this plan suits best

This simple anytime single‑rate plan suits households that prefer predictable pricing without managing peak/off‑peak windows. Small families and larger households can benefit from the open‑term flexibility and can reduce total monthly costs by bundling electricity with Megatel broadband, mobile and/or gas under MEGA Saver. Renters or those wary of long commitments may value the no‑fixed‑term structure on the standard plan. EV owners who value straightforward, same‑rate charging may find the plan convenient, but there is no EV‑specific or overnight‑cheaper tariff; those who primarily charge off‑peak to maximise time‑of‑use savings may wish to compare alternatives. Solar users can connect an import/export meter and receive a published buy‑back rate for exported generation, making this plan suitable if you want basic export credit alongside a simple retail tariff (self‑consumption still typically yields the greatest savings).

Additional services included

Optional add‑ons available when you bundle with Residential Electricity include: Broadband (discounted under MEGA Saver by $20/month; plan options typically include Fibre Starter, Fast Fibre and Faster Fibre), Mobile (monthly plan discounts ranging roughly from $3 to $16 depending on the plan; a one‑off $5 SIM delivery fee applies when adding mobile), and Natural Gas (10% off standard gas pricing when bundled). These services are optional and priced according to the chosen plan; standard acceptance criteria and standard installation/reconnection fees may apply. Other optional services sometimes used with bundles include modem rental for broadband (one‑off $15 delivery; rental terms apply), VoIP home phone (charged separately; delivered over broadband; emergency‑calling and vulnerable‑consumer considerations apply), and network/technical add‑ons such as a static IP (charged separately). The MyMegatel app/portal is included for account management and payments. Specific monthly prices for broadband, mobile and add‑ons depend on the selected plan and are confirmed at sign‑up.

Plan conditions at a glance

  • Residential customers only; standard acceptance and credit criteria apply. Electricity must be at the customer’s primary residence for fixed‑term welcome‑credit offers.
  • Simple Energy Plan is open‑term by default (no fixed term, no break fee). Some promotions (e.g., a 12‑month welcome credit) require a fixed‑term electricity contract with an early termination fee if ended early.
  • MEGA Saver bundle discounts require electricity plus at least one eligible Megatel service (broadband, mobile, or natural gas) at the same address and on the same account; discounts begin once all services are connected within the same billing period.
  • Pricing components include a daily fixed charge and variable per‑kWh charges by meter channel; rates depend on network/meter category and are confirmed via address/ICP check. Energy is billed monthly in arrears.
  • Low‑User and Standard‑User plans are available (subject to eligibility). Low‑User daily charges follow Government phase‑out settings and may change annually in line with regulation.
  • Megatel provides at least 30 days’ advance notice for price or discount changes. For fixed terms, prices can still change for taxes/levies, third‑party cost changes (network/transmission/metering), corrections to pricing inputs, capacity changes, or when moving property.
  • Payment methods emphasise secure recurring payments and in‑app/online payments; Megatel does not accept credit/debit card payments over the phone. Direct debit and recurring card payments are available via the MyMegatel app/portal.
  • Disconnection for non‑payment follows notice requirements (at least 7 working days’ advance notice and a final 24‑hour warning, unless emergency/legal exceptions apply).
  • Moving house ends address‑specific promotions; customers can re‑sign at the new property if services are available. Standard installation/reconnection and additional service charges may apply.
  • Solar export requires an approved import/export meter; exported generation is credited separately on the bill at Megatel’s published buy‑back rate.

Promotions and discounts

Megatel’s core ongoing offer for Residential Electricity is the MEGA Saver Promotion, which gives a 5% discount off standard electricity pricing when electricity is bundled with at least one other eligible Megatel service at the same address and on the same account (eligible services are broadband, mobile and/or natural gas). Additional MEGA Saver bundle discounts include 10% off standard natural gas pricing, $20 off monthly broadband pricing, and monthly mobile discounts that vary by plan (typically $3–$16). Discounts commence only once electricity and the other eligible service(s) are all connected within the same billing period, apply on open-term supply (no fixed term and no early termination fee for this promotion), and Megatel provides at least 30 days’ notice if any discount amounts change. An active joining incentive for 2025 is the Electricity $150 Welcome Credit Promotion, which provides a $150 credit for new residential electricity customers who sign a 12‑month fixed‑term electricity contract at their primary residence (the property must not have been powered by Megatel within the prior six months). The credit appears on the first bill; an early termination fee of $150 (incl. GST) applies if the contract ends early. This welcome credit can be combined with MEGA Saver bundle discounts. Timing requirements apply (connection usually within one month of application), and standard acceptance/credit criteria and standard installation/reconnection fees may apply. In some network areas, distributor rebates (for example, periodic credits from local lines companies) may be passed through on bills when the distributor issues them. Eligibility and timing are determined by the local network’s rules (e.g., being connected on the network’s stated eligibility date) and the credit appears on the Megatel bill under a network-discount line. These distributor payments are not Megatel-run promotions and vary by region and year.

How Megatel can change this plan's price

Megatel confirms electricity (and gas) prices at provisioning and may change them thereafter as allowed in its Energy Plan Special Terms. For customers on a fixed contract supply term, prices generally remain the same for the term unless adjustments are required due to taxes or levies (e.g., GST, Electricity Authority Levy, Emissions Trading Scheme), changes to third‑party costs such as network, transmission, or metering charges (which can affect both daily and variable components), corrections where pricing was set using incorrect or updated meter/network information, capacity changes initiated by the customer or network, or when the customer moves to a different property. For customers on open‑term (unfixed) supply, prices are not fixed and may change from time to time. In all cases (fixed or open‑term), Megatel provides at least 30 days’ advance notice of price changes and the reason for the change. If an application’s connection date is more than about three months after application, initial quoted rates may be reconfirmed closer to the actual connection date to reflect current standard pricing. For MEGA Saver (open‑term) promotions, Megatel may also vary the discount amounts with at least 30 days’ advance notice.

How the tariff works

  • Plan scope: when paired with Simple Gas, electricity is provided on Megatel’s Simple electricity plan. Tariff type: Variable single-rate (\"anytime\") with the same cents/kWh for 24 hours; there are no defined peak/off-peak windows or free-power periods.
  • How charges are calculated: a daily fixed charge plus a per‑kWh variable usage charge. Megatel offers both Low User and Standard User categories (availability depends on your primary residence and usage). From 1 April 2025, Megatel’s Low User daily fixed charge aligns with the Government’s phase‑out settings at $1.50/day (after any applicable discounts and before GST); Standard User daily charges and all per‑kWh rates vary by address and network.
  • Metering: a smart meter is not mandatory for the Simple electricity plan; if you have a non‑smart meter, Megatel may estimate reads. Bills are generally issued monthly.
  • Contract options: open‑term electricity is available; some welcome‑credit offers require a 12-month fixed term. Under MEGA Saver bundling, an ongoing electricity discount of 5% may apply while the bundle remains active.
  • Regional pricing: exact per‑kWh and daily charges are address- and network-specific. For Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central North Island, Eastland, Taranaki, Whanganui, Wellington, Marlborough, Westland, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, please contact Megatel directly to confirm the current daily fee and price per kWh for your ICP/location.

Who this plan suits best

Simple Gas with the Simple electricity plan suits customers who prefer straightforward, all‑day same‑rate electricity and the option to bundle services for ongoing savings. That typically includes small families and renters who value open‑term flexibility, one bill for multiple services, and predictable pricing without managing peak/off‑peak windows. It can also fit large households or small businesses that want to stack MEGA Saver bundle discounts across electricity, gas, broadband, and/or mobile. EV owners and solar users seeking the lowest possible off‑peak charge or specific export buy‑back arrangements may find a dedicated time‑of‑use or solar‑targeted plan elsewhere more optimised; however, those who prioritise simplicity and bundled savings over time‑shifting can still benefit.

Plan conditions at a glance

  • Simple Gas provides piped natural gas service in the North Island (service availability depends on address and network connection status).
  • Open‑term option: no fixed term and no break fee for the standard Simple Gas plan.
  • $50 gas welcome credit option: available to new residential gas customers who take Simple Gas on a 6‑month fixed term at their primary residence; credit is applied to the account (not cash); cannot be combined with MEGA Saver; gas must be connected within one month of sign‑up; early termination fee of $50 (incl. GST) applies if you end the term early; valid until 31 December 2025; move‑related fee waivers may apply if Megatel cannot supply gas at your new address or you continue service at the new address.
  • Bundling: to receive ongoing MEGA Saver bundle discounts (e.g., 5% off electricity, 10% off gas), the relevant services must remain connected and eligible.
  • Standard acceptance criteria apply; standard installation/reconnection and other service fees may apply. Metering and access requirements apply for reads and maintenance.
  • Operational note: due to current gas constraints, Megatel is not accepting requests for brand‑new gas connections in some areas (e.g., Auckland) at this time; existing connections can still be switched subject to eligibility.
  • Pricing may change for reasons including taxes/levies, network and metering cost changes, regulatory changes, or corrections to pricing category/meter set‑up; Megatel provides notice consistent with its terms.

Promotions and discounts

Simple Gas is a gas plan; electricity discounts become available when you also take Megatel electricity. The ongoing MEGA Saver bundle discounts include an electricity discount of 5% when you bundle electricity with one or more eligible services (e.g., gas, broadband, and/or mobile), and a 10% gas discount when gas is bundled with electricity. Discounts apply while the bundled services remain active; plan term depends on the offer selected (open-term options are available, and some welcome-credit offers use fixed terms). For electricity sign-ups, Megatel is advertising welcome-credit campaigns that may run alongside MEGA Saver. Current examples include a $150 electricity welcome credit for new electricity customers on a 12‑month fixed-term (this credit can be used with MEGA Saver) and a separate “Join online” $250 electricity welcome credit based on a 1‑year fixed-term electricity plan (campaign terms apply). In addition, Megatel may apply a prompt payment discount when the full bill is paid on or before the due date (eligibility varies). If you’re in a lines area that pays annual or semi‑annual network discounts (for example, Northpower or WEL), Megatel passes those through to eligible customers automatically according to the local network’s rules and the usage period those networks specify.

How Megatel can change this plan's price

Megatel charges electricity at the rates set out in your pricing schedule or special terms and may change your pricing schedule or move you to an alternative pricing schedule. If that happens, they will notify you and pro‑rate usage between old and new rates across the billing period; they will also give at least 30 days’ notice when charges that they recover on behalf of third parties (for example, distribution/lines companies, transmission, and metering providers) change, unless Megatel itself receives insufficient notice, in which case they will give as much notice as practicable. Valid adjustment factors include changes in government taxes or levies (e.g., Electricity Authority levy), regulatory changes (such as the phased removal of Low Fixed Charge regulations affecting daily charges), updates to third‑party network or metering fees, and shifts in Megatel’s own energy and business costs driven by wholesale market conditions. Low User daily charges are updated in line with the government schedule (from 1 April 2025, $1.50/day after applicable discounts and before GST).

Frequently asked questions

The Selectra expert answers your questions about electricity rates

  • Fixed rate: your unit price stays the same for the duration of the contract.
  • Variable rate: the retailer can adjust the unit rate at any time, with at least 30 days' notice. Prices broadly follow wholesale electricity costs.
  • Time-of-use: the unit price changes by period of the day — cheaper overnight and during off-peak hours, more expensive at peak times (typically 7-9am and 5-9pm).
  • Spot pricing: the unit price tracks the half-hourly wholesale market. Households with flexible usage can save when prices are low, but they are exposed to spikes during cold snaps or supply shortages.

The daily fixed charge covers the cost of staying connected to the grid: network maintenance, the lines from the street to your meter and the metering equipment itself. It is billed for every day you hold an active connection, regardless of how many kWh you use.

Households using less than 8,000 kWh per year (9,000 kWh in the lower South Island) may qualify for a low-fixed-charge tariff: a smaller daily fee paired with a slightly higher unit rate. This option is being phased out by April 2027, but it is still available today and is usually a good fit for small homes and singles.

Each part of New Zealand is served by its own local lines company (Vector in Auckland, Wellington Electricity, Powerco, Aurora, Orion and more). Each lines company sets its own delivery charges based on the cost of maintaining its network — and those costs vary widely:

  • Rural and low-density networks (East Coast, West Coast, parts of Otago) cost more per customer to maintain than dense urban ones.
  • Networks with significant underground cabling (central Auckland, Wellington CBD) are more expensive to upgrade but suffer fewer storm outages.
  • South Island networks pass through hydro-rich generation regions, which can lower the wholesale component on some plans.

For these reasons, a customer in Dunedin can pay a different rate from a customer in Hamilton on the same Megatel plan.

Comparing electricity plans is not just about the headline rate. Before signing, check:

  • Unit rate (¢ / kWh): what you pay for each unit of electricity. Lower is better.
  • Daily charge (¢ / day): a fixed cost added every day, regardless of usage.
  • Discounts: prompt-payment, direct-debit and online-billing discounts can knock 1-3% off the total.
  • Contract term and exit fees: open-term plans are usually free to leave. Fixed-term plans may charge a break fee.
  • Plan extras: free-power hours, EV night rates, solar buy-back, broadband bundle discounts.

Always cross-check your offer against several retailers using your real ICP and a 12-month consumption history before signing — the headline rate alone never tells the full story.

Under the standard terms used by most New Zealand retailers, variable rates and daily charges can be adjusted at any time, with at least 30 days' written notice to the customer. Notice is usually sent by email, on the bill, or via the customer portal. This 30-day minimum is industry practice rather than a hard statutory rule, so always check the price-change clause printed on the plan terms.

Fixed-term plans are different: the unit rate and daily charge are locked in for the duration of the contract (typically 12, 24 or 36 months). If you do not switch or renegotiate at the end of the term, you are usually moved onto the retailer's standard variable rate.
